The last round of Serie A played - the champions and top scorer in the league
The excitement surrounding the final round of Italian Serie A was at its peak - the battle was between the two Milan teams AC Milan and Inter who both had a chance becoming the champions in the 2021/2022 season. Of course, we also look at the outcome in the top scorer list, where a familiar old goal machine (in Serie A at least) won his fourth Golden Boot award in Serie A.The battle for the championship title in the Serie A season 2021/2022
Before the Serie A season 2021/2022 started, the favourites to win the Scudetto, as the Italian league title is called, was on the reigning champions Inter and as usual, Juventus. Among the challengers behind them was Milan, which has a young as well as a very interesting squad of players. Before the final round though, it was the challenger Milan who sat in the driver's seat. Milan was in the top of the table and had a two point margin against Inter, Juventus was already out of the gam a long time ago.In the final round, Milan had a rather difficult away match against Sassuolo while Inter took on Sampdoria at home. It looked like it would be a highly dramatic Sunday, but a French veteran killed the excitement pretty quickly. In the 17th minute, Olivier Giroud scored 1-0 for his Milan and a quarter of an hour later he also scored a second goal. And another four minutes after that, Franck Kessie scored Milan's third goal and Milan had in practice, already in the 36th minute, won both the match and the league title. Inter were struggling a bit harder against Sampdoria and it was 0-0 at half time but Inter would score three goals in the second half. So both Milan teams won their matches with 3-0, which meant that AC Milan were the true winners this afternoon - congratulations to Milan for the Serie A Scudetto 2021/2022!
The other two remaining Champions League spots for next season went to Napoli and Juventus. Napoli finished third after having a decent season, but they were not close to be threatening the teams from Milan in the end. Juventus' first half of the season was deplorable to say the least, and the fact that they ended up in fourth place and managed to save a UCL spot can only be seen as a bonus this season.
The battle for the final relegation spot
Venezia and Genoa had already been relegated to Serie B before the final round so the battle to avoid the third relegation spot was only between Salernitana and the Sardinian team Cagliari. Salernitana were the ones who had the best starting point as they had a two-point lead over Cagliari. Salernitana were playing the middle team Udinese at home, while Cagliari played away against the bottom team Venezia. However, Salernitana totally collapsed in their last match of the season. Already in the 6th minute Udinese made it 1-0 through Gerard Deulofeu and at half time Udinese was leading with 3-0, this despite missing a penalty in overtime in the first half. In the 57th minute, Udinese also scored a 4-0 goal and Salernitana went towards a hopeless loss.
This meant that it was enough for Cagliari to win against Venezia and they would save the Seria A contract for the coming season. Cagliari were pushing and trying frantically and had 18 goal attempts in the match, but still did not manage to get a single ball in to the net, and the failure for Cagliari was thus a fact. Despite his deplorable effort against Udinese, Salernitana will play in Serie A next season, while Cagliari will play in Serie B in the 2022/2023 season.
The top scorer in Serie A 2021/2022 - Ciro Immobile!
The first time Ciro Immobile won a Serie A Golden Boot award while playing in Lazio was already in the 2013/2014 season. After that, he has won the title twice more and in the 2021/2022 season, now 32-year-old, he won the top scorer title for the fourth time. This season he scored 27 goals in total, which was enough for a victory with a margin of three goals.Second in the top scorer list was the Serbian super talent Dusan Vlahovic. Vlahovic had played brilliantly and scored 17 goals in the first half of the season for Fiorentina when he signed for the giant Juventus in January. Juventus were lousy in the first half of the season, but they were on the rise again, and it felt like the arrival of Vlahovic to the club could lift both the team further and also give Vlahovic the title of top scorer. This was further emphasized when Vlahovic scored a goal in his very first match for Juventus. However, there were "only" six more goals coming from Vlahovic in the league, which was not enough for a top scorer title this season.
